How to prepare your body for before and after with The IV Bar
Sishay’ Ibuya! The Comrades Marathon has returned for the 96th time on Thursday, 8 June 2023. This week leading up to the race and the recovery afterwards is crucial. Preparing before the Comrades
According to Mark Wolff, a physiology and nutrition expert, you want to do (or not do) these things leading up to the Comrades:
- Hydrate: Athletes should ideally be consuming about 30 to 40ml water per kilogram of body weight daily.
- Keep your immune system strong: Think healthy, nutritious food with minerals and vitamins.
- Avoid alcohol, sugar, and stimulants: Alcohol dehydrates you, and sugar or caffeine are unnatural stimulants.
- Rest: Proper rest and sleep will keep your immune system strong.
Recovering after the Comrades
Here are some top recovery tips from previous runners:
- Keep moving: The experts say one of the worst things you can do is stay completely still.
- Fill up: Within 30 minutes of finishing, get some carbs and protein in your body and have a real meal two hours later (think peanut butter sandwiches, tuna, and chocolate milk)
- Refuel and rehydrate: Focus on restoring your fluid balance by drinking lots of water and getting an IV drip.
